Apple looking for buyers. Opportunities for fruit growers at the Targi Kielce’s conference

18 january 2023
How to manage apple yield and find foreign markets - these and many other issues were discussed at the Orchard Conference in Targi Kielce. Lectures and debates during the Fruit and Vegetable Farming Expo gathered a crowd of interested people.

The Orchard Conference consisted of several lectures and a debate on the problems of fruit growers;  i.e. costs, prices, new outlet markets and new fruit varieties, and even the option orchard operation phase–out.   According to preliminary estimates of the Central Statistical Office, 4.2 million tons of apples were produced in Poland in 2022, about 1.5 million tons cannot be used. Ways to increase sales were discussed during the debate "What alternatives do we have in apple production".

Adam Paradowski, the Plantpress publishing house president pointed out that there are more club varieties, i.e. high-quality dessert apples, which are in demand in the Western market. MP Mirosław Maliszewski, president of the Association of Fruit Growers of the Republic of Poland, pointed out that even more consumers expect economical fruit, but of high quality. – It is worth limiting the use of protection means and chemicals.  There are more informed customers who ask about the fruit and check whether they contain residues.  The Green Deal, which is the result of consumer research, can help us reduce the consumption of chemicals.  Let's bear in mind that apples may not be more expensive, but it will be markable - explained the president.

The high quality of apples and innovative products based on apples - these are also ways to find new ways for crop management - said Paulina Kopeć from the Fruit Union.  – Our PR is also important, how we are perceived abroad,  we should not be perceived as a country of divergencies.  Let's mark our presence in distant markets, such as Indonesia. Let’s present ourselves as a unified group of producers - she noted.

A fruit grower Jacek Pruszkowski focussed in the huge overproduction. – I believe that about 50 percent of fruit farms will have to find another form of business activity – he stressed. – Great changes are on  the horison, such as the Green Deal, we have a chance to adapt production to market needs.

The Fruit and Vegetable Farming Expo is held at Targi Kielce on 18 and 19 January 2023.  The Strawberry, Vegetable and Organic and Sustainable Horticulture Conferences are in the pipeline.  This expo brought together 311 exhibitors from 15 countries;
