Artificial intelligence in the service of defence - conclusions from the conference of the IDEAS Research Institute

04 September 2025
At the "AI and Defence" conference, which the IDEAS Research Institute organised on the third day of MSPO 2025, scientists presented directions of research on the use of artificial intelligence in the military. The discussions focused on algorithms supporting commanders in making decisions on the battlefield, data protection and privacy, as well as the growing role of AI in cybersecurity

The IDEAS Research Institute, whose aim is to counteract the outflow of scientific potential from the country and to implement research results in public administration and defence, presented its latest projects and development directions at the "AI and Defence" conference. The facility is chaired by prof. Piotr Sankowski, and it employs over 90 people – including teams specialising in cryptography, robotics, cybersecurity and natural language analysis.

Commander support algorithms

Dr hab. Tomasz Michalak, Professor of UW, presented the works of the  AI Strategy Lab, which focuses on building algorithms that support tactical, operational and strategic decision-making. Scientists are developing solutions for managing drone swarms and neutralising threats posed by adversary autonomous technologies, to name a few. As the speaker emphasised, the speed and accuracy of decisions on the battlefield will become a key element of military advantage, and artificial intelligence is already changing the way warfare is conducted.

Precise terrain description and situational awareness

Professor Engineer PhD. Hab. Krzysztof Stereńczak presented the project.  AI algorithms supporting situational awareness and decision-making on the battlefield  focuses on creating digital reality models in 2.5D and 3D, which allow for a precise description of the terrain, monitoring changes, and indicating optimal locations for the deployment of forces and resources. This makes it possible to plan troop movements in the most effective way, which leads to building full situational awareness of commanders and increases the effectiveness of combat operations.

Data privacy and compliance

The team of Dr. Hubert Niewiadomski works on algorithms for automatic data analysis and content classification from the perspective of privacy protection and regulatory compliance.  Researchers develop tools to detect sensitive information and prevent its leakage using NLP methods and semantic document analysis.

Cybersecurity as a new dimension of combat

Professor, PhD. Hab Wojciech Mazurczyk discussed research on counteracting growing cyber threats;  his team is responsible for detecting vulnerabilities in IT systems, detecting disinformation, and combating hidden communication techniques. As he emphasised, cyberspace is becoming an equal theatre of military operations, and artificial intelligence algorithms can determine the advantage in the race between attackers and defenders.

Experts unanimously emphasised that artificial intelligence is already changing the way warfare is conducted and will be a key element of defence systems in the coming years. Thanks to algorithms developed in Poland, it will be possible to make decisions faster and more accurately, reduce the risk for unmanned system operators and more effectively fend off cyberattacks.
