Not only 7,000 PLN. What additional benefits may families be entitled to after the death of a loved one?

A funeral benefit is often only part of the support a family can receive after the death of a loved one. NECROEXPO in Targi Kielce featured Jakub Rosiak, author of the publication "A Guide for Heirs and More. Funeral Finance”, pointed out that many people are unaware of additional benefits and possibilities of recovering due funds. He advised representatives of companies in the industry on what information they could provide to their clients.

The so-called unpaid ZUS benefit is one of the schemes -  it applies to situations where the pensioner died before receiving the pension or disability benefit due to him or her or when the proceedings concerning the benefit were still pending. In such cases, it is worth checking the possibility of obtaining payment by the family.

The speaker also drew attention to the targeted benefit granted by social welfare centres.  As he pointed out, it can help cover extraordinary funeral costs, for example, those related to repatriating a body from abroad or in the event of ineligibility for a standard funeral allowance.

A large part of the speech was devoted to funds accumulated on ZUS sub-accounts and in open pension funds. Rosiak emphasised that persons covered by the 1999 pension reform could accumulate funds subject to inheritance or payment to entitled persons. As he emphasised, each case should be verified individually, because the right to receive significant amounts may depend on the fulfilment of certain conditions.

Among the frequently overlooked benefits, the expert also mentioned employer-sponsored death benefits.  The family of an employee employed under an employment contract may be entitled to a benefit, the amount of which depends on the length of service of the deceased.  It is also worth checking the possibility of reimbursement of funeral costs from the deceased person's bank account and using the Central Information on Bank Accounts if it is not known where the deceased person had an account.

Jakub Rosiak also recalled the benefits available to families of road accident victims and the possibilities offered by the Medical Event Compensation Fund.  He emphasized that in case of doubts regarding the course of treatment, it is worth checking whether the family can benefit from this support path.

According to the speaker, many benefits are not paid automatically, so families should ask, check and verify available options. The lecture at NECROEXPO showed that funeral benefits are not always the only source of support after the loss of a loved one, and knowledge of the regulations can help in obtaining additional financial resources.
