German protection and special steel technology

14 July 2026
The growing importance of protecting critical infrastructure, military vehicles and mobile security systems means that armour steels and advanced structural components are playing an increasingly vital role in the modern defence sector.

During the International Defence Industry Exhibition, Salzgitter AG Defence – a division of one of the largest German steel and technology groups, specialising in solutions for the military and security sector – will present its offer.

Salzgitter AG Defence concentrates the group's activities on the defence market, providing comprehensive solutions for manufacturers of armoured vehicles, military infrastructure and protection systems. The offer includes not only high-strength armour plates but also tubes, structural components, assembly elements, and complete solutions designed for the construction of shelters, security systems, or specialised infrastructure facilities. Thanks to the competencies developed by the companies in the group, including Thyrolf & Uhle, the company offers clients comprehensive support – from materials to finished components.

The heart of the offer is the SECURE® protection steels, manufactured by Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH. They are characterised by high mechanical strength, very good impact toughness and hardness reaching up to 600 HBW, providing effective protection while maintaining appropriate technological properties. The material can be cut, welded, and formed both cold and hot, giving manufacturers great design freedom.

One of the distinguishing features of SECURE® steel is the possibility of obtaining very small bending radii while maintaining high hardness of the material. This reduces the number of welds, increases the strength of the structure, and enables the creation of more advanced vehicle elements and protection systems. This solution is valued especially by manufacturers of modern military platforms and specialised security structures.

Salzgitter AG Defence is also among the few German manufacturers holding TL (Technische Lieferbedingungen) approval, which enables the supply of steel to the Bundeswehr. Meeting the strict requirements of the German armed forces confirms the high quality of the materials and their suitability for the most demanding military applications.

An example of the practical application of the company's technology is the Parabella mobile shelter, made of SECURE 500® protection steel. The solution was designed with a view to quickly creating secure positions for soldiers and demonstrates that modern protection steels find application not only in armoured vehicles, but also in mobile infrastructure used during operational activities.
