Sacroexpo Premiere of "PIETA XXI" by Piotr Barszczowski. The work of art that moves and provokes reflection

15 June 2026
One of the most moving events of this year's Sacroexpo was the premiere of "PIETA XXI" by Piotr Barszczowski - the unveiling of the work at Targi Kielce gathered a large group of guests – representatives of the art world, clergy, media, exhibitors and visitors.

From the very first moments after the presentation, it was clear that the work evoked strong emotions.  Visitors lingered in front of the work, analysing its symbolism and discussing the message conveyed by this contemporary interpretation of one of the most important motifs in Christian art. There was ample emotion, reflection and questions about the place of sacred art in the contemporary world.

PIETA XXI is the original vision of Piotr Barszczowski, an artist, photographer, visual communication designer, educator and theologian who has been searching for new means of expression for themes rooted in the Christian tradition.  The artist once again used his signature "neostatized glass" technique, combining photography, light, and modern technologies with a spiritually resonant message.

The artist asked himself how to talk about the Mother's suffering, compassion, and love for her Son today. The result is a work that is not merely a contemporary commentary on the classical Pietà, but an attempt to find a new language for values and emotions.   Barszczowski consciously departs from the well-known Michelangelo model, proposing his own interpretation rooted in the experiences and sensibilities of the 21st century.  - The ladder plays an important role. It reveals the characteristics of a modern woman. Today, the mother, noticing the ladder, will use it to help her suffering son.   More women will help her save the child. The mother stands on a ladder and supports her son for as long as she can, as described by Piotr Barszczowski.  - Jesus' position is also symbolic, resembling a newborn baby shortly after birth, placed on the chest, explains the artist.

Many participants of the premiere emphasised that "PIETA XXI" is one of those works that does not leave the viewer indifferent. Just a few moments before the exhibition were enough to see how diverse the work evokes emotions – from admiration for the artistic form to profound reflection on the contemporary dimension of faith and spirituality.

The "PIETA XXI" exhibition strengthened Sacroexpo's role as a space for dialogue between tradition and modernity. Piotr Barszczowski's work can be seen during the 27th Expo. All works can be viewed during the 27th International Exhibition of Church Construction, Church Fittings and Furnishings and Religious, which takes place at Targi Kielce from 15 to 17 June 2026.
