Traveling by bus is five times cheaper than a private car ride. Youth debate at the TRANSEXPO

13 october 2022
How much does it cost to travel around the city? The students who visited the TRANSEXPO exhibition, which is now taking place at Targi Kielce leaned the answer to this question. They had the opportunity to take part in a short lecture combined with a debate on the means of transport

The meeting was organised by the Chamber of Urban Transport and was chaired by Piotr Stasiak, president of the management board Rokbus Trasnport Services Enterprise. Mr Stasiak met the large number of young people gathered at the conference, and presented the costs of traveling around the city. He put together two variants - driving a private car and using public transport -

the comparison results left no illusions. According to the Piotr Stasiak’s presentation, a car worth about PLN 20,000 used to drive up to 10 km per day produces the monthly cost of  over PLN 500, including vehicle depreciation, fuel, insurance, technical inspections and additional costs . However, the current price of a regular monthly ticket (in the extended zone) is PLN 110 - a 50% discount applies to pupils and students.

Traveling by public transport, in the case of people who are not entitled to a discount, is therefore almost five times cheaper than driving a private car.  Pupils and students can travel for 1/10 of what car journey costs.

Has the cost argument convinced the youth?  Not completely,  as the participants of the meeting appreciated much lower travel fees, yet most of them are still tempted by the idea of their own car. Among the disadvantages of public transport they mention infrequient itinerary of bus lines and the comfort of journey.

Such arguments did not surprise the lecturer -  Piotr Stasiak admitted that people using public transport often raise these issues.

- Among the factors influencing the choice of the type of transport, the most important are the network availability, timetables and the frequency of trips. If these do not satisfy travellers, there is a good chance that they will choose a private car despite the much higher costs - recapitulated President Rokbus, emphasising that local governments should constantly work on the quality of public transport in order to encourage new travellers.
