Is man descended from apes? Discussion with Father Doctor Michał Chaberek at SacroExpo
The conversation related to the theory of evolution and the Catholic faith. Father Chaberek, known for his uncompromising approach to theology and deep scientific knowledge, encouraged participants to reflect on fundamental questions: Is Darwin's theory consistent with Church teaching? How should we understand the creation story of Adam and Eve in the light of contemporary natural science? Is it possible to reconcile a literal interpretation of the Bible with the assumptions of evolutionism?
– This is not just an academic dispute – said Father Chaberek, – These are questions about the foundations of our identity: where we come from, who we are and where we are going.
Father Chaberek emphasised that the theory of evolution is, in many respects, contrary to the Catholic faith, especially if it is accepted in its neo-Darwinist version, which assumes randomness and a lack of purpose in biological processes. He also recalled that the Church does not reject science, but only on the condition that it does not contradict the revealed truth about the creation of man as a spiritual and corporeal being.
The conversation with the Dominican was an inspiring impulse to a deeper study of both Holy Scripture and natural sciences.
SacroExpo proves once again that it can be a place not only for presenting sacred culture, but also for profound reflection on contemporary spiritual and intellectual challenges. Books by Father Chaberek and many other esteemed thinkers are available throughout the duration of the SacroExpo fair in Targi Kielce, until 5 June.
