18 drivers to compete for the title of Polish Professional Bus Driver Champion. The final takes place at TRANSEXPO
TRANSEXPO will be more than a showcase for the latest buses and public transport technologies. On 16 October, Expo Kielce will also become the arena for a competition between Poland’s leading professional bus drivers. The final of the Polish Professional Bus Drivers’ Championship will mark the culmination of a multi-stage competition, as well as the closing event of the celebrations marking 80 years of PKS operations.
The qualifying rounds are over. The road to Kielce was not an easy one
The first qualifying round took place on 25 July in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, with 28 competitors at the starting line. The second stage was held on 22 August in Starogard Gdański, attracting 24 drivers.
Competitors began with a written test on road traffic regulations. The top 15 advanced to further challenges covering first aid and pre-departure vehicle checks. The 10 best competitors then qualified for the decisive precision driving test. Six drivers from each of the two qualifying rounds secured their places in the final in Kielce.
The final route to the championship was through an online qualifying round. The six drivers with the highest test scores received invitations to Kielce. This completed the 18-driver line-up for the final. The field includes three women, as well as members of the Polish team competing in the UICR World Professional Drivers’ Championship.
Knowledge, first aid and centimetre-perfect driving
The final will put the full range of a professional driver’s skills to the test. Competitors will face a test on public transport regulations and road traffic law. Their knowledge and practical skills in first aid, including the use of an AED defibrillator, will also be assessed.
The biggest excitement is expected to come from driving around a specially prepared precision course. Drivers will tackle challenges designed to replicate situations encountered in their everyday work, including entering a garage, pulling precisely into a bus shelter and positioning the vehicle at a bus station bay.
Speed alone will not be enough. Accuracy, composure and a precise feel for the dimensions of the vehicle will be crucial, with the final result potentially decided by mere centimetres. The overall ranking will be determined by the total number of points scored across all challenges.
The Iveco Irisbus Crossway bus used in the competition is provided by the Championship’s Strategic Partner, IVECO BUS.
