The coffee runs out; the cycle goes on: EKOTECH on the circular economy

01 October 2026
International Coffee Day is the perfect excuse to explain the circular economy with a simple example. The beans give us our brew, and the grounds needn’t end up in the general waste bin: put to good use, they can help the next crop of plants to grow. It’s exactly this kind of thinking that increasingly defines EKOTECH, the Circular Economy Trade Fair.

In a circular economy, materials and resources stay in use for as long as possible, and even your daily cup of coffee illustrates the principle in action.

The event’s new full name, EKOTECH – Circular Economy Trade Fair, reflects its broader focus on reuse, recycling, bio-waste and closing the materials loop.

The bin’s been emptied, the bin lorry disappears round the corner, and as far as residents are concerned, that’s that. For the city, though, this is where the real work begins: sorting, recovering and processing everything we’ve thrown away. The more that can be recovered, the more material goes back into circulation and the less ends up in landfills. World Cities Day is a good moment to take a look behind the scenes.
