Stansted Airport is undergoing extensive modernization
Advanced renovation works are carried out regularly every 10-15 years. The aim of the modernization is to keep the airport apron in good condition. Care for the users’ safety is the main reason.
The 3048-meter airport runway is operating to a very limited extent now. The airport is used by a few commercial flights, there is the predominance of cargo services - cargo planes provide the necessary goods for the United Kingdom.
The unprecedented flight downtime has been caused by the coronavirus pandemic around the world. At the same time it has been the impulse for the airport's engineering and operational team to start broad-scale modernization. The scheme involves replacement of 3,600 airport lights for energy-saving and high-performance LED lamps - the new lighting will reduce operating costs. They are also more environmentally friendly. The new high-visibility lights will make it easier to operate in low visibility conditions: - The runway is obviously a key asset for the airport, and it’s critical it is maintained to the highest standard. Commenting on the news London Stansted’s asset maintenance services director, Kathy Morrisey, said: “We all recognise this is an extremely difficult and challenging time for the whole country, and here at the airport it is no different following the dramatic and unprecedented reduction in flights.
Specialised machinery are being used to lay 1,000 tonnes of asphalt.
Works on the runway take place from Monday to Friday, completion planned for 24 April.
