Safety, relationship and boundaries – Dr Aleksandra Piotrowska on the foundations of children's mental health at the Kids' Time fair

19 February 2026
An authority, a psychologist a PhD holder and researcher at the Faculty of Pedagogy of the University of Warsaw, lectures on "Tomorrow's education begins today. The Child at the Centre of Changes in the Modern World” and focuses on how to wisely support children's mental development at home and at school.

She inaugurated the conference of the Świętokrzyskie In-Service Teacher Training Centre with a lecture discussing a key condition for proper development is a sense of security, based on the satisfaction of basic needs, love and acceptance, protection from threats and the stability of rules and norms. A child needs clear, well-thought-out boundaries as these give them a sense of order and teach them how to function in relationships.

Dr Aleksandra Piotrowska emphasises that effective parenting does not mean either severe pressure or "stress-free". The best results are achieved with an approach that combines respect, acceptance and consistent requirements. The child's behaviour should be assessed, not their personality.

The central concepts are mental fortitude – the ability to maintain balance in difficult situations – and resilience, the ability to rise after failure, built on three pillars: support from others (“I have”), self-esteem (“I am”), and specific coping skills (“I can”).

Dr Aleksandra Piotrowska emphasised that raising children in the age of the internet is becoming increasingly difficult, and the most important "currency" in the relationship with a child remains time and attention. Without conversation and relationships, there is no effective education.
