Enactment of the second Westerplatte attack repel staged at the Historical Reenactment expo

The air at the end of August 1939 was filled with anxiety and anticipation. Poland, conscious of the threat posed by the powerful neighbour in the west was especially restless. According to German documents, the first siege was planed to take place on 26th August; it was only delayed unsuccessful peace-keeping attempts.

Westerplatte fights
The Westerplatte crew was equipped with heavy duty weapons only - the 4 81 millimetre mortars, the 2 37 millimetre anti-tank cannons and 75 infantry support gun. There were also 18 pieces of ckm (heavy machine gun), 17 pieces of rkm (hand machine gun) and the 8 lkm (light machine gun). The soldiers had also about 160 riffles and 40 pistols at their disposal. Food storage was supposed to up-keep the crew for a month. According to the original plans the Westerplatte was supposed to put up defence for up to six hours, in fact it resisted for as many as 7 days.

The enactment of the second German attack will be staged on 30th March in Targi Kielce as a part of the first Historical Reenactment Forum. The performance will be put up by a few dozens of people from historical re-enactment groups from all over Poland, including those who have recreated the Westerplatte transit post and depot.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the event!
