Designing horizontal fall protection systems on flat roofs – challenges and solutions

Leszek Grabowski

When a horizontal safety system design is not a design, and why the market needs clear guidelines

The aim of this presentation is to draw attention to the lack of clear, binding and understandable rules for the design of safety systems that protect against falls from height. I will also present arguments in favour of the need for reliable control and verification of the correctness of the designs developed. I will also discuss the risks resulting from the lack of standardisation and the need to develop consistent guidelines for the design of horizontal safety systems.

Maciej Moskwa

Risk calculation in practice – standardisation of risk assessment and selection of fall protection measures

The presentation introduces a new, proprietary tool that supports the risk assessment process during the planning and design of safety systems. The ‘Risk Calculator’ allows for a simple and repeatable assessment of the level of risk and selection of adequate fall protection measures – from individual solutions to collective protection. Participants will learn about the logic behind the calculator, the structure of the questions and how to interpret the results, as well as examples of its use in design and operation. The presentation is aimed at designers, contractors and those responsible for the safety of facilities who are looking for tools to standardise the risk assessment process and decision-making on the level of safety measures.

Marek Sikora

Horizontal fall protection system – essential elements. Synergy between the anchor point and SOI

Selecting the right personal protective equipment for working on roofs. Why is it crucial to consider this issue at the design stage?

Marcin Kurzyński

Basic mistakes in designing the layout of roof anchoring devices

The layout of anchoring devices is sometimes designed in such a way that it does not provide protection at all edges, makes it difficult to reach risk areas and safely enter and exit fall hazard zones. I will show the most common mistakes resulting from a misunderstanding of how these systems are used and how they work, including the frequent omission of the required free space below the user. I will present simple rules for the placement of safety equipment.

10:15 - 10:45 The consequences of faulty instructions for laying sheet metal roofing

The presentation will refer to errors in instructions, design descriptions, etc.

Final conclusions – are we, the craftsmen, Alfa and Omega on the construction site... and for how much?

10:45 - 11:15 Significant, insignificant and... dangerous - how to assess changes in structures, not only roof structures.

The line between a significant and insignificant change can be difficult to define. In practice, modifications considered insignificant from a legal perspective can significantly alter the way a structure works and often significantly shorten its service life.

The aim of the lecture is to discuss the procedures for introducing changes in the light of Articles 36a and 57 of the Building Law and to indicate the legal and technical assessment criteria that should accompany every decision to make a change before it turns into arbitrariness, a significant defect or... a disaster.

11:15 - 11:30 Award ceremony for the Roof of the Year competition, organised by the Fachowy Dekarz i Cieśla magazine

During DACH FORUM – the 5th Congress and Trade Fair for Roofers, Tinsmiths and Carpenters, which will take place on 15–16 January 2026, the Roof of the Year 2025 competition will be decided. This is one of the most important industry awards, highlighting the quality of workmanship and professionalism of the best roofers in Poland. The fact that the competition is very popular is confirmed by the number of entries submitted – there are over 100!

The awards in the competition will be presented by the organiser of the poll – the editorial staff of the Fachowy Dekarz i Cieśla newspaper – together with the patron of the event, Blachy Pruszyński.

The main goal of the Roof of the Year competition is to promote high standards in the roofing industry and to recognise masterful roof construction in Poland. The competition also aims to educate the market and showcase the high level of roofing work, the skills of roofers and the variety of roof construction techniques.
