IRENA report: Renewable energy sources go from strength to strength.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) produces comprehensive statistics on a wide range of renewable energy issues.
Sun and wind with top scores
The Agency’s latest report offers a detailed overview of the increase in renewable energy’s market share. Last year the global RES energy-mix share increased by 7.6 per cent, with Asia being the clear front-runner with its 54 per cent boost in installed capacity.
Despite the fact that the RES expansion had slightly slowed the pace last year, the overall renewable energy growth was well ahead of the development in fossil fuels. It has been more than 2.5 times, with solar and wind energy contributing to 90 percent of the total renewable capacity added to the mix in 2019
Solar energy capacity grew to include 98 GW in 2019, 60 per cent of which in Asia. Wind power capacity increased by nearly 60 GW thanks to growth in China (26 GW) and the United States (9 GW).
