New regulations on the recycling of packaging waste
Deloitte data shows that nearly 45 percent of packaging waste is generated in households, and the remaining 55 percent originates in the industry and trade. Moreover, it was also noted that the recycling level of packaging waste in Poland is gradually increasing. Since 2022, two regulations on this issue have become a part of the legal system.
The first determines the annual levels of packaging waste recycling in the period from 2022 to 2030 on the side of those introducing packaging products. The obligation to achieve ever higher levels in packaging waste recycling: in 2022 59%, in 2023 - 61%, in 2024 - 63%, in 2025 - 65%, in 2026. - 66%, in 2027 - 67%, in 2028 - 68%, in 2029 - 69%. and in 2030 - 70 percent.
The regulation also sets the required recycling levels for packaging waste made of plastics, wood, glass, paper and cardboard, aluminium and ferrous metals.
The second document specifies that starting from 2022, the levels of recycling of packaging waste will be calculated after rejecting the so-called ballast waste. Until now, the packaging waste mass to be introduced into recycling processes is the mass at the gate of the treatment plant. As the result of the changes, the packaging waste’s weight is the one after performing the necessary control activities, sorting and other activities aimed at removing waste that is not subject to further packaging recycling.
